Why the iPad won’t support Flash

Very informative post here from John Gruber on Apple, Adobe and Flash.

I am not (yet) an Apple user. My phone is currently a very old model Nokia that is next to indestructable.

The lack of support for flash always struck me as a limitation. I love flash videos and post quite a few here on innovationchef.

This post gives the technical and political background to the subject. I found it very informative and understand a lot better the technical limitations and why Apple have made their choice.

International Conference for IP in Ireland

It is coming up soon so get organised!
It is the 3rd International Conference for Intellectual Property, Trademarks and Patent for Ireland.

In the lovely Radisson Hotel, Dublin 8 on the 18th-19th Feb

The theme this year is “Research, Innovation and Investment”

Should be good:

The IP Ireland 2010 Conference has been designed to draw on key industry leaders that can share their vision and practical strategies for the development and commercialization of the IP heading into the 21st centaury knowledge based economies. The role that intellectual property now holds with in companies is seen at the heart of many debates, including those over technology transfer, copyrights & trademarks in a digital age, public domain, access and benefit sharing in relation to resources, and the availability of intellectual property protected information.

Are Great Innovators Born or made

Very excited to have an article published in the latest edition on Technology Ireland. The magazine is dedicated to providing the inspiration to innovate. Entrepreneurs, researchers and technology managers share their real life stories. It is a good read and a great resource.
The article is here.

I guess my pet topics came up.

  • Encouragement of natural creativity
  • Positive thinking
  • TRIZ

The basic point I make and probably the basic point of this blog. is this…

Creativity is not a black art. Innovation can
be learned and developed. It may take some
perseverance in the beginning, but, as with any
skill, practice yields great results. A little coaching
and some simple techniques can help us relearn
what used to be everyday. Harnessing this skill
and focusing it is the key to creating an innovative
and smart economy. It can begin with you.

Love some feedback folks…

Innovation 2010

Well it has been a while getting back to blogging. The day job has soaked up nearly all my time and probably will for the next little while. There is a lot to look forward to innovation wise in Ireland this year. The Innovation Task force report will be out soon. We will get bored with the recession after a while. The iPad just got released. The Irish Dragon’s Den will be back. So I may not be a super blogger this year but I’ll not let things go too quiet.

missed the iPad announcement?

Ireland secures Research and Innovation Portfolio

Big news for Innovation Ireland
Ireland has secured the Research and Innovation portfolio in the European Commission, the Taoiseach Brian Cowen announced today. Máire Geoghegan Quinn, Ireland’s nominee to the European Commission, will be allocated this portfolio by Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso.

The portfolio includes the European Union’s important Research Framework Programme, which has a budget of in excess of €50 billion over seven years (2007 – 2013).

Mr Cowen said:

“I am delighted to announce today that we have secured the hugely important Research and Innovation portfolio, which resonates very strongly with our own Smart Economy agenda. It is testament to the calibre of Máire Geoghegan Quinn that she has been allocated this portfolio.”

The research and innovation portfolio covers the main EU research institutes and structures, including The Joint Research Centre (JRC), The European Research Council (ERC), The Research Executive Agency (REA) and The European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA).

What will this mean for Ireland?
