Handbook of Journalism

Came across this great resource today. It is the Handbook of Journalism from Reuters, the news agency. I am on the outer fringes of what could reasonably be described as journalism but I am very impressed See here for my last printed article. This handbook is incredibily rich and detailed and rewards even a casual browse.

If I may, with full attribution to Reuters quote:

The 10 Absolutes of Reuters Journalism
  • Always hold accuracy sacrosanct
  • Always correct an error openly
  • Always strive for balance and freedom from bias
  • Always reveal a conflict of interest to a manager
  • Always respect privileged information
  • Always protect their sources from the authorities
  • Always guard against putting their opinion in a news story
  • Never fabricate or plagiarise
  • Never alter a still or moving image beyond the requirements of normal image enhancement
  • Never pay for a story and never accept a bribe

Incredible Masterclass on leadership, culture, accountablity and creativity.

Interested in how a small PC manufacturing startup became the most succesful creative and commercial film studio of our time. PIXAR the company behind Toy Story, Up and WALL-E is a huge success by any standard and this video is a huge insight into that success.

I have watched this video a couple of times now and got a lot out of each viewing. Ed talks about how Toyota and their culture and values where an inspiration to the early company. The culture he has built is one of challenge and creativity but also one where leadership and team functioning is core.

A lot of ground is covered: from building design to team design, the review process (pre and post release) and on the management of creative people. If you want to learn how to build functional teams and manage for success rather than just trying to avoid failure then learn from the best.

Watch and learn:

More (free) Innovation resources for Educators

You’re invited – virtually!

This looks really really good.

HP, in collaboration with the International Society for Technology in Education, invites educators around the world to participate remotely in the 2010 HP Innovations in Education Worldwide Summit.

This year, more than 100 educators from 60 higher education and 20 secondary education institutions in 23 countries, will be attending the summit in person as part of their 2009 HP Innovations in Education grant. The event is scheduled for 22-24 February and includes opportunities to learn from education experts and innovation thought leaders such as Michael Horn (co-author of “Disrupting Class”), Georges Haddad (UNESCO, Higher Education initiatives), Phil McKinney (HP Innovation “guru” www.philmckinney.com), David Williamson Schaffer (www.epistemicgames.org), …and students as they discuss how social media impacts their learning experience.

Are Great Innovators Born or made

Very excited to have an article published in the latest edition on Technology Ireland. The magazine is dedicated to providing the inspiration to innovate. Entrepreneurs, researchers and technology managers share their real life stories. It is a good read and a great resource.
The article is here.

I guess my pet topics came up.

  • Encouragement of natural creativity
  • Positive thinking
  • TRIZ

The basic point I make and probably the basic point of this blog. is this…

Creativity is not a black art. Innovation can
be learned and developed. It may take some
perseverance in the beginning, but, as with any
skill, practice yields great results. A little coaching
and some simple techniques can help us relearn
what used to be everyday. Harnessing this skill
and focusing it is the key to creating an innovative
and smart economy. It can begin with you.

Love some feedback folks…
