Conference this week in Cork organised by the Cork BIC Business Innovation Centre. It’s the second such event and it is great to see Ireland discussing IP in a meaningful way. The theme of the conference was “Protection and Commercialisation” which is a pretty much the business motivation for Intellectual Property ownership in a nutshell. IP is a hugely important asset for a business and not one to be overlooked. Any effort to increase knowledge and reduce fear on the subject is to be commended.
I work in IP management and view it purely and simply as securing and protecting a return on the investment that has been made. It has got to be part of a business strategy. That strategy might be to sell on or license your IP to someone who can bring it to market but in order to do that it must have value potential. If you are a technology business you need to have an IP strategy that looks at least 5 to 10 years ahead. That means you need to have at least part of your business strategy looking that far ahead. In what countries will your product be sold? Where would be the biggest market if you could be successful anywhere? Who are the competition? Where are they based? Simple questions that an experienced IP professional can help you with. It’s not a plug for anyone or something to make you worried it’s just part of putting the business plan together. if you have any questions drop us a line chef@innovationchef.com
