Innovation is being touted as the saviour of Ireland. Every politician talks up the need for Ireland to Innovate to beat the recession. Get Creative! Innovate or die! The call is loud and clear. Teach Innovation to our school children! If in Ireland, as in so many places, Innovation is seen as the only way forward why is there little debate about what Innovation is? Everyone thinks it is the “right idea” but what is Innovation?

Here at InnovationCHEF we are pretty keen on Innovation, but try not to get hung up on the semantics. Innovation tools are to make it easier to achieve your goals. There to make design, product delivery and problem solving easier, more productive and more predictable. ‘Innovation is the key building block in developing strong indigenous industry,” says the Taoiseach Brian Cowen. Absolutely. Obama has his Innovation and Technology agenda. Fantastic. We’d love to see the strategies develop to make it as easier as possible for the smart, creative people to get the tools they need to create value and employment.

Everyone, every human being has creativity and dreams and ideas. Innovation is realising some value out of them. Every economy needs help at the moment. Ireland in particular. There is no magic wand to be waved. Certainly learning a bit about the patterns of inventions or how to tap into that creativity in you or your teams isn’t going to change things overnight. But if the people with ideas and vision can be helped to achieve their goals sooner, with less dead ends and disappointments then so much the better for us all.
